Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
